Rosseti South installed 5,700 bird protection devices in 2022

In 2022, Rosseti South installed 5,700 bird protection devices (BPDs) on overhead power transmission lines in the regions of the company’s operation, which is 12% more than in 2021. The amount of funding to ensure the protection of birds from electric shock was 3.6 million rubles (an increase of 2.7%).

Most bird protection devices (3.6 thousand pieces) were installed on power transmission lines in Volgograd Oblast which is inhabited by several red-listed birds, like white-tailed eagle, black kite and goshawk. The work was carried out within specially protected natural areas (natural parks).

More than 1.8 thousand bird protection devices were installed in Rostov Oblast. This region has a significant number of specially protected natural areas. Bird protection devices were installed, for example, on power transmission lines in the Fominskaya Dacha natural park and Leskovo tract in Millerovo Region, in nature reserves "Primanichskaya Steppe" and "Khlebnaya Balka" in Salsky Region.

About 200 bird protection devices were installed in Astrakhan Oblast and almost 70 devices were installed in Kalmykia. About 150 species of rare and endangered birds (white-tailed eagle, owl, mound eagle, steppe eagle and burrowing eagle) inhabit these regions.

The program to equip power grids with bird protection devices has been implemented at Rosseti South since 2012. Power transmission line sites are determined based on the recommendations of ornithologists, taking into account the nesting sites of birds. At the moment, the total number of bird protection devices in the regions of the company’s operation is almost 37,900 pieces.

Modern bird protection devices are polymeric covers made of cutting-edge dielectric materials. They cover the insulators where the wire is attached to them. Bird protection devices are designed to prevent wires from shorting when birds land on power transmission lines. Installation of these devices reduces the number of bird-related disruptions of power supply to customers.
